WordPress Theme Framework Bake-Off

Monday, March 28th, 2010 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm

Suggested & facilitated by member Alan Bergstein, this month we will collectively evaluate three popular WordPress theme frameworks, Thesis, Headway, and a third (to be decided). This will take place live during the March meetup, from 7:30pm - 9pm. We will select three people to drive each of the three themes in attempt to complete a specific goal (e.g., create a simple, three-page site with certain images, sidebars, posts, and functionality). We will not proclaim a "winner" but instead use this experiment to understand how these themes work in an apples-to-apples comparison, and determine how flexible and intuitive they are, or are not.

  • 7-7:30pm - Networking, Pizza
  • 7:30-7:40pm - Opening remarks, updates, any other business
  • 7:45-8:50pm - Live framework Bake-off begins!
  • 8:50-9pm - Wrap-up

ATTENDEES: During the RSVP process, you will be asked for: (1) your vote on the third theme to test-drive, and (2) if you would like to be included in the selection pool of three people to drive the themes during the live session.

As a new member who is tweaking the "Artemia Premium" theme, I would love to discuss it with others doing the same. Please email kmb@betterbio.org if you have any experience with it - thanks!

Red Ember Marketing is working on a project utilizing the WP e-Commerce plugin. If you have experiences you'd like to share, or are interested in using it in the future and would like us to follow up with you about our own experience, let me know.

The session was full of great information. Learned a lot from both the presenters and the audience questions. Getting to see how the back office is set up and works for all three themes was most helpful. Thanks to you all.

Was hoping the presenters would dive in deeper. Didn't learn much you couldn't find on the theme's about page. Also wish the third theme was one more people had heard of, like Genesis or Hybrid. Also felt like some of the presentations went pretty long limiting time for discussion at the end.

I would like to thank the presenters for taking the time to put this presentation together...It's amazing what you can do with Wordpress...Great sharing of your knowledge...

I thought the presenters did a great job of showing the pros and cons of the various WP themes. My take away is that they all are relatively good and the WP community is incredibly helpful. I have found that to be true. I will load my pictures at some point today.

I liked the topic and format, and was happy to see results - I think that was a better call than trying to do it "live." My only complaint is that the room was really, really warm (too warm).

Unfortunately, it was much less technical than I had hoped. I think it would have been more helpful if there had been more structure to the presentations. Take a specific task and show how it was done with each theme. The presenters seemed to me to lack a sense of focus and so did not really provide anything more than what I could have gotten spending a couple of minutes looking into them on my own. I certainly appreciate the effort, but do need to be honest and say that I was disappointment with the outcome.
